Short Visits in the Tropics.

Pareronia valeria (Cramer 1776)

Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Pieridae
Subfamily: Pierinae
Tribe: Colotini
Genus: Pareronia

Wingspan approximately 80mm.

Fascinated by the unsually colourful sight of some large flashy blue butterflies repeatedly visiting flowers with elegant gliding motions of wings, I decided to stay outside in the heat of midday to capture a series of pictures that I would like to show you here in a brief sequence.

The sequence may serve as an adder to my previous posting that showed a single capture full size, and it might cheer up our dark northern hemisphere days of winter just a little bit.

Pareronia valeria, the Common Wanderer, prefers open tropical forests with moderate rainfall at low elevations. Quite common in the jungles of India’s Western Ghats as in the densely forested hills of Goregaon, the butterfly can also be observed as a visitor to flower gardens even in densely populated urban areas. A quick and determined flyer, the butterfly is fond of visiting brightly coloured flowers. Males are restless flyers with migratory habits, females seem to stay close to their genuine jungle habitat.

Both sexes, and in particular the broadly dark veined females are possibly mimicking the unpalatable Blue Tiger Danaid (Tirumala limniace) of which our fellow TN member Ram Thakur has posted a picture from Mumbai a few days ago. So these pretty Wanderers may just look unpalatable or even dangerous to their predators.

But humans simply may call the conspicuous butterfly a “flashy beauty”.

Guten Abend Peter,

The only thing that I think is... poor butterfly... the whole time that you should have pursued her!
Excellent composition, idea and presentation my friend.
A complete, sharp, clear and luminous vision of this so beautiful species, with diverse POV.
Another success for your personal portfolio.

Hi Peter

This is a splendid set of images of this wonderful butterfly.
I really like the way you explained every image, showing the technical part for each of them.
Besides that, the picture themselves are very beautiful, all carefully taken in ( i think) quite a harsh light condition, but you were very attentive and did not over-exposed any of them (although that could have easily occured).
The colors and tones everywhere are charming, the details very clear and sharp and the all-in-all composition great!

Bravo, my friendn and TFS
Horia

Hallo Peter,
Anne

Hi Peter,
Excellent idea to show different views of this lovely butterfly. Its colors and drawing worth this collage. I think this is a really beautiful butterfly.
TFS, José M.

A veritable feast of colours to the eyes, Peter. The collage presents the Common Wanderer in its best possible aspects as seen through these four extremely well captured images.
You do a great service to Indian fauna by sharing these precious gems collected during your visit with the global TN community.
Warm regards,
Ram

Hi Peter

A wonderful collage showing this beautiful butterfly in an array of the best possible POV's which includes a slanted side view, an oblique frontal view, a top view looking down on the insect, and an indirect rear view. Sometimes one gets the impression that the collage gets used to hide some photos of lesser quality, whereby reducing its size hides away that fact, but here each individual photo is outstanding material and in its own right worth to be posted as stand-alone photos.

A great compilation with striking compositions, the colours are stunning and well saturated, the details on each shot is clear and well defined, and the exposure(s) was perfectly managed.

Excellent work my friend and well complimented with a fascinating note. TFS.

Regards
Loot
