Mother and Son.

Semnopithecus entellus (Dufresne 1797)
Hanuman Langur.

Classis: Mammalia
Subclassis: Theria
Infraclassis: Placentalia
Ordo: Primates
Subordo: Haplorrhini
Infraordo: Simiiformes
Taxon: Catarrhini
Superfamilia: Cercopithecoidea
Familia: Cercopithecidae
Subfamilia: Colobinae
Genus: Semnopithecus

For Europeans, it is rather unusual and emotionally appealing to meet wild monkeys in their genuine habitat - and to meet them there in a totally relaxed state of mind, obviously trusting and accepting you as somebody they definitely do not have to be afraid of. The kind of benevolent and respectful treatment religious Hindus show to animals and the Hanuman Langur in particular since many generations does show consequences on the standard behaviour of animals obvious to everyone.

That late afternoon at the hour of sunset it was an unforgettable experience for me to walk slowly through a troup of langurs gathered around their sleeping trees on top of a hill overlooking the holy town of Pushkar. I was touched by their behaviour and appearance that evoked a strong feeling of understanding and being closely related to them.

Hunaman Langurs are vegetarians, and usually they are less aggressive than other Old World monkeys. But there are moments in the life of such a troup that may be violent, that is when dominant males are in danger to be replaced by juvenile males. And if juvenile males are successful in taking over the power from an old male, these young males are likely to expell infants forcing them to stop sucking at their mothers’ breasts in order to make the females sexually conceptive again before time.

So let us hope this mother and her son are able to continue their life in peace and harmony.

For details on distribution and morphology please see my previous posting.

Hi Peter.
I like your new line of pictures so much. Lovely done pictures: last and this one.
Nice captures scene and moment. It reflects the family relationships and feelings perfectly. The quality of your shot is excellent, as usual: perfect details and sharpness of the monkeys, lovely delicate colours, distance and POV are very fine as well as the cropping and DOF (BG is beautiful and very expressive). TFS. Best regards and happy holiday time, my dear friend.
Alexei.

Hallo Peter,

Hi Peter
Great photo and fantastic note. Very nice moment. Maybe you could add a little bit more contrast.
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hello Peter,

Another fantastic picture from you!!! You managed excellently the exposition in order to let us see the different tones of black and white: not easy with those "colors"... Look at those giant hands!!! And I like the fact that the mother didn't look at you (so you really didn't bother them!). Good pov and composition...

Excellent picture and TFS,

Michel

Hi Peter

What a terrific capture of this very emotion-full and intimate moment.
The POV here is great adn it allowed you to capture a very nice, protective, attitude of the mother langur.
Also the DOF is excellent, the exposure is spot-on and the natural colors are lovely.
Also the pose of the two is great and the composition is wonderful. As usual, the presentation and the note is impeccable:)

Bravo, TFS and Happy Holidays my friend!

Ricardo

A typical and moving scene mother and son, always impacting Peter.
I like the point of view that you captured with the adult's look and the position protector around the youth.
Good framing with accurate vertical election, with good tones, focus and sharpness, although the face of the monkey, appears something dark (perhaps the use of the flash has helped).
I made a workshop trying to optimize this detail... I hope you like it.
Regards and my best wishes... Ricardo

Very good DOF, sharpness, detail, & pose.

Hallo Peter,
- Bin in Eile... später
Lob an Euch Beide.
Gruß
Heinz

Hi Peter,
Tender and relaxed scene of this mother and son. It's clear that our close relatives have a more balance brain. Perhaps we need here monkeys like that to get the benefit that Hindus are getting/giving from/to them.
Best regard mf

Hello Peter , This one is a lovely shot , thanks for youre wishes , Wy Wish you and youre family Merry Cristmas and Good 2007 , Greetings Teunie and Jaap .

What a natural moment, Peter! Wunderbar!

I have to say that I like the fact that this monkey shot was taken in its natural setting very much! I rarely get cranked up by seeing zoo-animals, so to see a commonly shot animal in the wild is such a treat.

Now to the actual technical photo aspects:
compo: great;
colours: beautiful, gentle and not overdone;
focus, sharpness, etc. : very good;
presentation in protrait mode: excellent.

Thanx for sharing! J.
