The Hills of Rajasthan.

This is my “Goodbye to India” here on TN for a while.

The picture shows an evening view from Savitri temple hill down to the town and the lakes of Pushkar. A number of pictures on Indian wildlife that I presented on TN over the last few weeks were taken in that area.

Showing a bird’s eye view of a town normally does not fit into the goals of TrekNature. I hope you accept this exception as it is intended to show how well a sizeable human settlement can be imbedded into a landscape in harmony with nature. Here we are overlooking a town that houses a permanent population of about 15,000 people and another 100,000 people living in tents who are here to attend holy ceremonies and one of the world's largest fairs, the Pushkar camel market, by the end of October into November.

Rajasthan, often called the Desert State of India, covers some 342,000 sq km in the north-western region of India, and this state is not just sand dunes. The Aravallis, a range of rocky hills that run from Delhi in the northeast down to Gujarat in the southwest, are crossing the state and devide Rajasthan into a very dry northwestern part in the shadow of monsoon and a fertile southeastern part that is covered by grassland in the plains and scrubby forests on the hills. With the first burst of thunderclouds, these hills turn green, and they stay in a pleasantly green state from summer monsoon into the Indian “winter”, the months from November to March.

Deciduous trees commonly found here are the Khejri (Prosopis cineraria) and various types of acacia.

Rich nature existing very close to human settlements, and a peaceful coexistence of nature and civilization has been one of the unexpected highlights of my short trip to India. The series of images on Indian nature that I was able to present here on TN in the last few weeks may serve as a proof.

The location:

26.5° N 74.55° E, the plains are located at an average elevation of 500 meters, hilltops approximately 750 meters above sea level. The holy town of Pushkar is placed around an artificial lake that was created in the 12th century when a dam was built to hold back river waters for irrigation.

The camera:

SONY DSC-H5, 3072 x 2304 pixel, sRGB, 6mm wideangle (= 36mm at 35mm SLR), F/4, 1/100 sec., ISO-125; no tripod, no flash; 30.10.2006, 17:22 local time.

Postwork:

Photoshop Elements, downsized to web presentation, slightly sharpened; brightness, contrast and saturation slightly adjusted.

P.S.:

Legend has it that the

> lake of Pushkar

was created when God Brahma dropped a

> lotus blossom

from his hands into the Pushkar valley.

Thank you for looking.
Have a very good day.

Hi Peter,
Though as you said it not a typical TN photo, it shows an instance of Nature blended with Humans instead of Nature swept away by Humans. An invitation to think about how they/we live.
Best regards, José M.

Hi Peter, I hope your pic is accepted - it is a good way to end your India photos - as the nature shots you have shown us has been quite amazing. I find this interesting and a good way to show us the area where you were when you took the photos. Well composed too, TFS
Janice

Peter, I think it fits here well, simply because many of haven't been to Rajastan but have enjoyed your recent series. With this shot we get some idea of what the country is like.

Hi Peter.
What a nice story and beautiful view.

Your story is filled by such love to inhabitants of this surprising country and small town, and the picture so has well shown harmony of these people with the nature, that even the most hard moderator has not dared to touch this small beautiful piece of a photo art and literature.

Perfect point of view. Clearness of paints is simply tremendous. Perspective and space are reflected perfectly both geometrically, by level of sharpness and colour tones.

DOF, saturation, details, exposure and contrast are really outstanding.

Delightful finale in this lovely Indian suite. BRAVO, my dear friend.
Alexei.

Hi Peter,
What a beautiful vista and a what a great POV. That tree really helps to size the image. Personally I would have waited for the lady to disappear. Het clothing is claming a lot of attention.
