Common Crow, Euploea core, is a common butterfly found in South Asia. The Common Crow is the most common representative of its genus Euploea.

It is a brownish back butterfly with a wing span of about 8-9 cms and white markings along the margin of the wings and also on the body. There are three races depending on the size of the rings.

THe birds do not eat these butterflies and because of their inedibility, they have a leisurely flight. It is distasteful to the birds because of the chemicals extracted from the latex of the plants consumed at the catterpillar stage. Those who try to attack it will soon learn to avoid it as the alkaloids in its body causes vomiting. The predators soon learn to associate the patterns and habits of the butterfly with unpalatability.

The most interesting fact that i learned while studying about this butterfly is that there are a number of other butterflies that mimic the Common Crow.A number of edible butterflies referred to as MIMIC try toresemble the inedible butterfly which is referred to as MODEL. the resemblance is not only in butterfly markings but also in the behavioral and flight patterns. This form of mimicry is called as BATESIAN MIMICRY. Some of the mimics are the common raven, the malabar raven, the common mime, the great eggfly etc.
for more information on its life cycle, please refer Wikipidia-Common Crow.

one thing i would like to share with you is that i have seen its pupa. They are golden in colour and they were on the ficus I had in my garden. We broke the twig and kept it in a bottle to see the butterfly emerging out of it. In a few days we saw a beautiful common crow fluttering eagerly to go out and explore the world. Ofcourse! we released it.

I took this image using 80-400mm nikor lens. The original version is quite good even without the little bit of sharpening i had done in this uploaded image. One thing i have noticed is that this lens works best with good lighting.otherwise it doenot make the image stand out against the background.

Hello Smitha,
Fine composition and Bg in this presentation of the Indian Common Crow, though it is a bit soft. The Lantana flower helps to give this shot a splash of colour.
TFS, Regards, Ivan

Hi Smitha,
An excellent composition and framing of this shot. Beautiful soft light and a good exposure have the colors looking great. Nice detail with a well contoled DOF to give a soft OOF backround.

Hi Smitha,
This is a very clean presentation!
I like so much all the sharp details got on the butterfly, to enjoy the pattern and colors on their wings, and specially the white spots on the body.
DOF works marvelously, in a such delicate way for the background flower.
Great composition and presentation.
Congratulations and thanks for share.
My best regards,
JM

Hello Smitha,
This is a wonderful shot of this butterfly.
Excellent POV,clarity and sharpness.
Great job.

Hi Smitha,
First of all, well done by writing a detailed note.
The power of the lens is manifest in the image; however, it is Smitha behind the camera that comes out strongly here.
Well chosen point of view, good DOF and fine composition.
Regarding cropping or framing, it is a very personal decision. Here it may have or may not have made any difference.
Keep shooting and I am sure you would get the best possible results out of this lens.
I too am with you :-)!

Hi Smitha,
Excellant capture of the common indian crow butterfly. I lik he use of DOF here. only BF and flower on which it is sitting are in great focus. The adjecent flower is in soft focus. Nice details and sharpness. Nice BG. Well done

Regards
Mahesh

Smitha,

Now this is a brilliant picture. Good sharpness and nice background. I saw your comment about the lens. Practically most lenses cannot shoot sharp pictures at their full aperture. Try shooting at F8 or F11 in Aperture priority mode. You will need a tripod if you are shooting at 400mm. You have good investment in lenses.

Murali Santhanam

Very lovely composition, Smitha.
Perfect POV of that butterfly showing fine details of the body.
The juxtaposition of the brown wings on the bright flowers make for a striking effect. The subject stands out well against the blurred BG.
