Redwhiskered Bulbul, Pycnonotus jocosus is a member of bulbul family. It is 20-22cms in lenght. it is brown above and white below with abroken black necklace on breast. It has a pointed black upstanding crest, crimson whiskers (which renders it its name)and crimson patch under the root of its tail. sexes are alike.
Redwhiskered bulbul is a native to Southern Asia and it seems it has been introduced to various countries like North America, Australia, Singapore, Mauritius, Hawaiian Islands etc.
These birds are well adapted to trees and shrubs in large subarban areas or yards. They are usually tame and confiding. they build their nests in bush or roofs of inhabited huts. we had a pair nesting in the ixora bush in my uncle's garden. nesting season is february to august with two to three broods per season. Both sexes share parental duties.
They have a clear musical call which is readily disinguishable. They feed on flower nectar, fruits and insects.I think the young are fed mostly on juicy plump insecta and caterpillars as each and every time they returned to nest they brought back insects to feed their young. Within 15 to 18 days the young were fledged and left the nest. And now, after a peroid of five to six weeks the parents've returned to the same nest and laid three more eggs.

I took this shot when it tried to build a nest in a shrub in my backyard. I was attracted by its musical call and saw it perching on a pole in my backyard. i took the shot with Nikor 80-400 lens. I 've cropped the image in photoshop.
