Green cover under clear blue

Imagine ... standing on a remote mountain surrounded by 'never-ending' rain-forest, a clear sky, tropical sounds and smells and breathing in - you really feel it - clean and fresh air. In the night, the blue sky becomes really black and you can see as many stars as you want - fascinating. That's the highlands of Papua.
The picture was taken in a mountain region (Jayawijaya) of central West-Papua, formerly called Irian-Jaya as the most eastern province of Indonesia. The island of Papua Newguinea is the second largest island on earth (771.000 square km) and is still covered with huge areas of rain forest. The picture shows a view from a mountain ridge in the vicinity of a small settlement, called Apahapsilli. In this area, villages are often located on moutain plateaus separated from the next village by deep valleys and rugged mountains. Separation of the inhibitants is most often not only by natural barriers but also by completely different languages. There are several hundred distinct ethnical groups and languages spoken in Papua. High diversity is also true for animal life and plants.
Areas, like the one shown here, can be reached by several days walking from major villages or occasionally by a Cesna, which starts from Wamena on the central plateau. |

Hi Peter,
Green, green and more green...how many shades can there be?Nice to know that extensive rain-forests like these still exist and are virtually untouched.Nice use of foreground and background to distinctly divide the image and to partially frame it.Difficult strong light which you handled quite well.Maybe not my choice of colour for the frame.
Regards, david
So Peter, how is it that you got there?...by Cesna or did you walk several days? : ) It is an interesting, well exposed image. I may have been tempted to crop or clone out the branch in upper left corner.
Thats for sharing. Great note too.
Evelynn ; )
Hi Peter,
Nice to view your picture of this thick tropical rainforest in Papua. I went to this place -Wamena and its viccinity-several months ago and recently I visited Manokwari. I posted some of photos in Manokwari. Please visit them if you have time. Hope that will bring up some memories for you...
This is a nice and clear shot.
Nicely done.
