PIRARUCU

Captured at Sea World Indonesia. These two fishes are really large, about 2 meters in length.

The Arapaima (Arapaima gigas), also known as the Piracucu, Pirarucu, or Paiche, is one of the world's largest freshwater fish. The species is reported to reach lengths in excess of 3 m (9.8 ft.) and weigh up to 200 kg (440 lb), although these reports have been disputed. As one of the most sought after fish species in South America, it is often captured by spearing for export, and, consequently, large Arapaima of more than 2 m are seldom found today.

The diet of A. gigas consists of other fish or even small animals, including birds. This fish is able to survive extensive drought periods by gulping air and burrowing in the mud or sand of the swamps.

En Espanol:

Crece hasta superar los 3 metros de largo y pesar hasta 250 kilos. En cierta época del año vive en aguas poco oxigenadas, por lo que el oxígeno que absorbe por sus branquias es insuficiente, así que debe respirar aire atmosférico o "boquear" al menos una vez por hora. Esto le ayuda a respirar ya que la mucosa de su boca es muy rica en vasos sanguíneos, por donde realiza el intercambio de aire sin tener pulmones. Esto lo hacen otras especies del Amazonas, como la anguila eléctrica.

Vive en el río Amazonas, en Perú y Bolivia, aunque ha sido introducido para su pesca en Tailandia y Malasia. Su hábitat se inunda casi la mitad de cada año por las lluvias y el deshielo en los Andes, por lo que una parte del año nada entre los árboles, y cuando baja mucho el nivel del agua (en algunas zonas altas de la planicie amazónica) se entierra en el lodo con la cabeza fuera, probablemente de ahí su forma de respiración.

Su dieta consiste de otros peces y hasta de pequeños animales terrestres, incluso aves, que captura cuando caen al agua, o incluso dando saltos fuera del agua.

I like the silvery color of them....
but focussing is a bit out of range especially in the face areas, choosing a wider diafragma would be better I guess...
nevertheless this image is very attractive..
oh ya, good use of available lighting too and info is very useful....TFS!

the silvery glow is awesome as is if they were made of metal.
good sharpness on the bodies, slightly soft focus on the faces
which is ok at 1/40 with a moving object i guess, and the
flash worked well, through the glass, good job.

very nice double take on this shot. Very well timed and cropped so the fish are very well place in this frame. Nice sharp details even through the glass and the metallic color comes through very good. Very well done.

Hello Benyamin,
Good picture because was taken in poor light conditions, having a glass in front that produce distortions. Focus is not optimal but is nice the image.
You write no flash used, but if you see in photo info says flash used. It´s a mistake? I thik that was fired.

Very nice picture. Ive never seen - or even heard about - this kind of fish! Nicely captured and great light control! Nice details on the body, though head is slightly out of focus. I guess that is due to the movement of the fish and the fairly long exposure. Im impressed that you got such a sharp photo at all in that light!

Wow, Ben, what a fantastic capture! These fish don't even look real, they almost look metallic in nature. Good job shooting through glass, I've posted a few aquarium shots here (we have a huge one in Atlanta now) and it is difficult to capture well.

Hi Ben. Good shot of these interesting fish, fancy growing up to 3 metres, would feed a lot of people. Good clarity and colour. Off to Kalimantan next week, hope to see some wildlife. TFS. Murray.

Hi Benyamin intresting image of these silvery fish, looking at the large scales of both fish they look sharp so the blurr of the head is probably due to movement. I think you did remarkably well through thick glass.
Did you clean it 1st and were you in contact with the glass? and was the flash held away from the camera?
