'Jawa' Hawk Eagle (Spizaetus bartelsi)

Spizaetus is a genus of bird of prey. It is a group of medium-large tropical eagle with most species occurring in southern and southeastern Asia. However, there is one representative of this genus in the rainforests of West Africa and two in the tropics of the America. Several species have a prominent head crest, including Spiuzaetus bartelsi

Spizaetus eagles are forest birds with several species having a preference for highland woodlands. However, this 'Jawa' Hawk Eagle is more frequently observed at lowland to foothill forests. On the island of Java, Indonesia, two congeneric hawk-eagles occur, i.e. the endemic Javan hawk-eagle Spizaetus bartelsi and the wide-ranging changeable hawk-eagle S. cirrhatus. Comparisons with similar species-pairs in South-East Asia suggest that these species may be competitors both in habitat and diet. The limited area and less-diverse resources of islands should make competition between similar species more acute and should lead to marked niche segregation, with a larger niche breath for the endemic species. Spizaetus bartelsi was recorded significantly more frequently in forest habitats from sea level to 2500 m asl and S. cirrhatus more in open habitats up to 1600 m asl.

They build stick nests in trees. The sexes are similarly plumaged with typical raptor brown upperparts and pale underparts, but young birds are distinguishable from adults, often by a whiter head.
These eagles eat medium sized mammal, bird, and reptile.

The population of this impressive raptor is very small. Moreover, given the destruction, disturbance and degradation that is currently being inflicted on its preferred habitat, it is inferred to be declining and increasingly fragmented, a circumstance that qualifies it as Endangered.

Excellent focus on the Eagle. The feathers show well. The eye is crystal clear. I wish the background could be lighter, but we cannot always chose background. The depth of field would probably be better if you were using a lens with longer focal length? Very good note!

Hello Benny, nice shot with excellent details on the eye.

Hello Benyamin,
A pleasant profile portrait!
Good details in the plumage, lovely colours and the bird is nicely isolated from the background!

Hello Ben,
though a slight increase in F/stop could have created a higher DOF it is an beautiful picture. Very well captured with nice colours (especially the green in the background).
Well done, Jacob

Hello friend,
I'm one picture late in my comments, so I'll start by this fantastic one :) You caught excellent details on this magnificent bird and I really like this POV and composition. Its pose is very good as you can admire its amazing yellow eye. I also like this great green BG that let the bird stands out very well! This is really well done. I wonder where this picture was taken. Thanks,
Claudine
