[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Genus Surendra Moore, 1879 is known colloquially as "Acacia Blues". This specimen is a male of the species Surendra vivarna Horsfield, 1829, and is another in my "Butterflies of Sulawesi" theme.

Larvae of this genus feed on Fabaceae, of which Acacia is one type of plant. Others recorded as food plants include the generea Albizia and Paraserianthes. The larvae are attended by ants, in this case Anoplolepis longipes.

Distribution is from India south and east to Sulawesi, but not in China nor on the Philippines.

The butterfly is shown shortly after emerging from its pupa, having been reared from eggs collected after observing an ovipositing female. As Batu suggests that only Albizia of the foodplants is known from Sulawesi, then this was probably the host here. A workshop post shows some leaves of the plant.

The photograph was taken hand-held with a ring flash using Ektachrome 200 ASA slide film. The slide was scanned with the OptikFilm 7200i, cropped a little, resized and sharpened for TN.

Happy New Year to all at TN!!

Hello Alan,
the species shown is well-defined by your non-digital picture. The details of the wing-markings are amazing. Do you know the actual food-plant in Sulawesi Utara? As far as I know, Acacia- and Paraserianthes-species do not occur in Sulawesi, but there are 5 different Albizia-species.
Best wishes, Peter

Hi Alan,

This framing is very artistic, the DOF splendid and the butterfly Vivarna(Void of colour - in Sanskrit) is exceedingly beautiful and sharp.

Great work,

Warm regards,
Kiran

Hello Alan,
Excellent capture of this Sulawesi butterfly. Interesting to see and I like the very beautiful wing patterns and colours that stand out very nicely against the beautiful colour of the background. A lovely composition!
Many thanks and best wishes, Ulla

Ciao Alan,
