[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
NATURE OF SULAWESI and INSECTS OF SULAWESI
These series of postings are intended to increase the knowledge on Sulawesi's biodiversity. Except for butterflies, little is known on most other insect groups and on spiders of this huge island. Many new species can be expected to be discovered. Large parts of Sulawesi are only poorly explored also with respect to butterflies, such as the south-eastern Peninsula, Sulawesi-Tenggara.

The picture shows a spider species of the family Salticidae. It was rather fast and always tried to hide under the leafs and preferred the shadow.
The metallic iridescent colors were very impressive, in particular when touched by intermediate sunlight. Body length: 9 - 10 mm.
The spcies belongs to the genus Cosmophasis and looks similar to C. umbratica. But I am not 100% on species identity.

Sharpness could be better, but this was the best picture I achieved of this interesting spider.

Location
Rain forest margin close to a rivulet. About 20 km west of Kolaka on the south east peninsula of Sulawesi.

- natural light, cloudy (ISO 400)
- no wind
- handheld

Hello Peter!

For some reason digital cameras 'like' to set focus on leaf not on main subject - I've got same situation hundreds times :-) But I agree with you - picture is worth posting, because subject is very interesting. I like its stylish, metallic colours. Composition with green leaves is also very good. Nice work.

What a nice tiny spider. Very attractive species. As always, details of the picture are ultimate, both insect and leaf are reproduced precisely and all tiniest features of these objects are shown perfectly. Framing of the scene is superb. Well done and kind regards.

Hello Peter,
A fine high quality macro of a Jumping Spider from Sulawesi. Though the DOF is limited, the legs and their iridescent colours show sharply and well against the contrasting leaf BG.

A lovely colorful spider you have here. Nice composition and POV. The lighting, and details are wonderful. It could do with a bit more DOF and sharpness but it looks splendid the way you've captured. TFS.

Hi Peter,
It can be very difficult to capture the metallic sheen of silvery objects but I can well imagine what this looked like.
A hgood documentation of an interesting species not often seen on TN.
