Sulawesi forms an important part of a proper faunal region, the Wallacea, which can be regarded as specialized transitional zone between the Oriental and Australian region. It is characterized by a high percentage of endemic species (40%),i.e. species occuring only there. This is also true for the milkweed butterflies (Nymphalidae, Danainae): 15 out of 38 Sulawesi Danainae are endemic. One of these, is
- Euploea hewitsonii
shown on the picture. The underside of the wings shows pale colours only while the upper side is black, white and blue iridescent. However, wings are mostly closed when resting.
The specimen shown here appears to be connected to a root pipeline by its proboscis, sucking ... whatever.
