[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Rousettus (Ahmet) kindly dedicated a posting to me yesterday, so I am returing the favour today :) . This posting probably gives a more accurate impression of the reserve, near the viewing centre - I mentioned it was difficult to get 'clean' shots of the birds, there were so many - an estimated 12,039 on the day of my second visit.

The image shows both types of crane - the taller White Naped, with red around their eyes and the smaller Hooded.

The White-naped Crane,-

Grus vipio is a bird of the crane family. It is a large bird, approximately 130 cm (4 ft) tall and weigh about 5.6 kg (12 lbs) with pinkish legs, grey and white striped neck, and a red face patch.

The White-naped Crane breeds in northeastern Mongolia, northeastern China, and adjacent areas of southeastern Russia where a program at Khinganski Nature Reserve raises eggs provided from U.S. zoos to bolster the species. Different groups of the birds migrate to winter near the Yangtze River, the DMZ in Korea and on Kyūshū in Japan. They also reach Kazakhstan and Taiwan. Only about 4,900 and 5,400 individuals remain in the wild.

Its diet consists mainly of insects, seeds, roots, plants and small animals. The eggs are about 3 1/2 inches in length.

Due to ongoing habitat loss and overhunting in some areas, the White-naped Crane is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is listed on Appendix I and II of CITES.

The Hooded Crane,-

Grus monacha is a small, dark crane. It has a grey body. The top of the neck and head is white, except for a patch of bare red skin above the eye. It is one of the smallest cranes, but is still a fairly large bird, at 1 m (3.3 ft) long, a weight of 3.7 kg (8.2 lbs) and a wingspan of 1.87 m (6.2 ft).

The Hooded Crane breeds in south-central and south-eastern Siberia. Breeding is also suspected in Mongolia. Over 80% of its population winters at Izumi, southern Japan. There are also wintering grounds in South Korea and China.

The estimated population of the species is between 9,500 individuals. The major threats to its survival are wetland loss and degradation in its wintering grounds in China and South Korea as a result of reclamation for development and dam building.

The Hooded Crane is evaluated as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It is listed on Appendix I and II of CITES.

Wow! Now that's a lot of birds. Were they fed grain or something else or all natural feeding? Reminds me of the Swan wintering area I visited recently where a local resident dispenses 1200 lbs of corn a day for the birds. Thanks James for this cool shot.

Hello James, this is a really awesome shot. I love the dof. Particularly like the central composition, showing the 1 taller crane standing out from the crowd in the middle helps bring it to focal shot. Superb detail and sharpness. tfs Rgds Necip

Hi James, it's not easy to give the sense of multitude in a picture and I think you managed well. I like the dof as the birds that are blurred in the background give an impression that there are birds infinitely. This is quite nice. The colours are superb and the red stains of the cranes' heads give a pictural look to this picture. Thank you!

Hi James,
No wonder that it is so difficult to single out a bird for photographing. This is an eye opening picture. TFS this fantastic scene from Kagoshima.

Hello James,
This is an impressive capture of a tight gathering of Hooded and White-naped Cranes feeding. Great lighting and just the right DOF. Reminds me of the Common Crane gatherings we have in Southern Sweden. The most famous locality can have over 10,000 in April.
Nice dedication to our friend Ahmet.
Thanks for sharing this one,

Wow, what a beautiful crowd!! Very interesting to see the two species together here. Amazing how they differ in size! Excellent capture, sharp details and beautiful colours. Nice to see that they still occur in large numbers!

Hi James!

This is a particular picture. It's funny to look at these red spots standing out against the white and grey of the feathers and the well blurred background.

Kind regards
