The Blue Admiral(Kaniska canace) is a striking and unmistakable butterfly. It ranges from Ceylon(Sri Lanka) to Indonesia, covering vast area of south east Asian countries.

Usually, many species of "the Admiral" butterflies feed on Urticales, Fagales or Salicales which are included in Magnoliopsida. However this species feed on Liliflorae which is included in Liliopsida(monocots). In addition, its distribution is expanding into tropical and sub-tropical region much more than those of other "Admirals".

Anyway apart from a difficult story on taxonomy, I absolutely like this beautiful butterfly.

In autumn of late 70's, when I was a small child, I happened to encounter this butterfly at a rose garden in nearby park. At that time, I was getting interested in butterflies. So I was very surprised to see the butterfly rested on a wooden bench and thought I would catch it. My father took off his hat and carefully got closer to it. Finally he caught it! What was a great delight! Of course, I was too young to know how to make the specimen and how to keep it neatly in a collection box, after all that butterfly had losted somewhere.

Even now, when I see this "blue admiral", I always remember sunny autumn day when I first saw this lovely butterfly.

Hi Motoki,
Fine study of canace with good colours and composition. I saw one early in the morning in Kanazawa during my recent trip to Japan. It was warming up on some rock in the garden there, Kenrokuen I think is the name. Very pretty coloured animal. Thanks.
