Aurelia aurita
Moon Jelly or Saucer Jelly
These common sea jellyfish are found near the cost in warm and tropical waters but they can apprarently tolerate a broad range of temperatures (from -6 to 30 degrees Celsius). They are located in nearly all biogeographic regions.
They range in size from 5 to 40 cm.
Aurelia are carnivorous and feed on mollusks, crustaceans, nematodes etc. The horseshoe shaped structures are apparently their gonads.
I took this photo at the Osaka Aquarium, which is quite spectacular. They have a wonderful jellyfish exposition. |
