Hi Folks,

Are chillies hot? Think twice or ask these small fireants!

Fire ants, sometimes referred to as simply red ants, are stinging ants with over 280 species worldwide. They have several common names including Ginger Ants and Tropical Fire Ants (English), aka-kami-ari (Japanese), and Feuerameise (German).

A typical fire ant colony produces large mounds in open areas, and feeds mostly on young plants, seeds and no exception...hot chili!

Chili fruits have fiery hot flavour which is concentrated along the top of the pod. The stem end of the pod has glands which produce the capsaicin, which then flows down through the pod.

The white pith, that surrounds the seeds, contains the highest concentrations of capsaicin. Removing the seeds and inner membranes is thus effective at reducing the heat of a pod.

Fire ants only bite to get a grip and then sting (from the abdomen) and inject a toxic alkaloid venom (piperidine).

For humans, this is a painful sting, a sensation similar to what one feels when burned by fire — hence the name fire ant — and the aftereffects of the sting can be deadly to sensitive individuals.

So, yes...chilies are hot and the fiery heat not only in our mouth when we eat it but also in the fireants' sting!

Thanks for viewing.

Hello Agoes,
This is a very fine macro showing some Red Ants busy on a decaying chilli fruit. The technical quality allows us to see the ants with excellent sharpnesss and detail and teh composition is great.
Thanks for sharing this fine image,
Best wishes, Ivan

Assalamualaikum Agoes,

I was away for a few days and I already miss your post.

This chilly is well digested by these ants. Good sharpness and focus here with nicely lit image and well controlled depth. I like the image but I am allergic to these ants.

Well done and thanks for sharing.

Regards,
Jusni

Very clear and nice macro work. Enough DOF to shows all the ants detail.
I never seen them eating chili before.
