I am a little surprised to see a giant puffball with a stalk and if the grass is a good scale these have to be a very small giant puffball :)
Never the less good sharpness and colour.

I have never seen such a strange looking mushroom. Excellent pov showing the shape. I was surprised to read that they are edible when young. A very interesting post with good information, colors, and details.

So many from your part of the world come here to the west coast of the US and pick such as these, BUT caveat that many of ours ARE POISON and I have heard of many folks dying from ingestion....unknowing that they were not the same as say...well last week a couple died...I believe from Laos...but a good lesson on the mechanics and whys of how this mistake can be made from country to country!

Hi Jusni,

Very nice shot of this interesting mushroom, however, it is not a Giant Puffball, Calvatia gigantea. It looks very similar to Calvatia cyathiformis that grows here, I've added a photo of that species to the workshop for your comparison.

The Giant Puffball doesn't have a "stalk" or sterile base like yours does, so that rules it out as being C. gigantea, and also, the Giant Puffball is truly giant, gets much bigger than the one in your workshop photo. I've collected them here with a diameter as large as 24 inches and they get considerably bigger than that.

I don't know if C. cyathiformis occurs in your country, but it certainly does look like that one. As far as I know, all species of Calvatia are edible in their young stage, but as soon as they show even a hint of color on the inside, they are no longer good and may cause gastric upset.

Hi Jusni,

Great looking Calvatia. Seems like John's ID specification was right, although I didn't find any info on the net (or I wasn't careful enough) this fungus lives in Asia, only North America and Oz (Australia). Which is sure this specie doesn't live in Europe.

Adrian (aes_thor) said the colors are oversaturated to his taste. This was most probably caused by using flash - at least the colors seems like gotten firing flash. By my opinion they aren't bad, but probably a longer exposure in flash off mode would have been a better choice. Fungi are difficult to capture, I know. :) Let me show You what I think, on another Calvatia specie.
