Hello friends in TN,

I was clearing the rough area around my house with my tractor mower and spotted bunch of skippers flying around.

Although skippers appear to be moths, they are actually a third group that is related to both butterflies and moths. Skippers, like moths and butterflies, are found worldwide. Skippers share characteristics with both moths and butterflies and sometimes have the appearance of being a cross between the two.

SKIPPERS FAQ

What is a skipper?
Skippers are butterfly-like insects of the order Lepidoptera; they have an exoskeleton (like all arthropods and insects), three body parts, six legs, a pair of antennae, compound eyes, a coiled mouthpart (called a proboscis), and wings that are covered with colorful scales.

Are skippers important?
There are about 3,000 different kinds of skipper in the world . Skippers are important as plant pollinators and as food for other animals (birds, mammals, spiders, and other insects).

How do skippers grow?
Skippers have a very special growth pattern. They actually change shape as they go through their life cycle. This change is called metamorphosis. Skippers go through a complete metamorphosis with egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.

Do skippers have a caterpillar stage?
Yes, in the skipper group they have a larva that is commonly referred to as the caterpillar. Skipper caterpillars are similar to most other types of butterfly and moth caterpillars (slender bodies with a head, thorax and abdomen; three pairs of jointed legs on the thorax and 2 to 5 pairs of jointless "false" legs (called prolegs) on the abdomen). However, the caterpillars of skipper generally have a small thorax and a large head, giving them a distinct "b-g-headed" appearance. Most skipper caterpillars have large appetites and eat large amounts of food as they grow.

Do all skippers look alike?
No, skippers come in many sizes, shapes and colors. The wings of skippers are actually covered with tens of thousands of special wing scales that overlap like shingles on a roof, and each kind of skipper has a different pattern.

Where do skippers live?
Skippers can be found in many types of habitats, but they are most frequently encountered in fields, roadsides and trails, and open forests.

How do skippers and humans get along?
A few species of skipper caterpillars damage crops and pasture grasses. However, they also serve as food for many birds and animals.

Aren't some skippers rare?
Because of people's activities and destruction of skipper habitats, some skippers have become rare, threatened, and endangered.

Thanks for viewing.

Hello Jusni,
The colourful OOF natural BG shows this skipper up well. It is sharp and taken from a fine POV in this well composed image. The little spider below it is a bonus.
Thanks for sharing this beauty,
Ivan

Wow, Jusni! You have got something else too within the frame and you haven't even mentioned it. It looks like a spider enjoying the meal of a green bug!
Of course, the Skipper astride a flower is well captured but it is the double subject content in this picture that makes it special.
Well done and thanks for sharing this exciting image.

Hi Jusni,
What I like most about this one is the composition. Nice angle and POV. Good exposure on the butterfly and the spider adds interest. TFS.
Ken

Superb notes Jusni, as again you continue on your quest to image all of your countries insects and flora...I was just now telling Ram how well you represent Malaysia! In colour and happenstance that you and I share similar gear. Very nicely done..but those notes...they are priceless..

Hi Jusni.
You managed to catch two attractive insects at one moment. I also like scene at whole. Set of sharp and blurred fine flowers an smooth green BG are looked perfectly. You have selected DOF excellently. We can see tiny details of the insects and flowers on the FG. BG is nicely smoothed and nice too. My best wishes and TFS.

Ciao Jusni,
una doppia bella cattura, bellissima composizione con questo splendido OOF BG verde brillante, buona nitidezza, belli anche gli aspetti grafici della composizione.
Grazie e complimenti.
Maurizio

Salam Jusni,
Today, I saw very similar skipper to yours. Probably only colors similar each other, not conspecific.
Recently, I also saw Thomisid spider camoufled and hunted skipper and ate. You captured both of them together with a great macro-shot. All features great. thanks for sharing. best wishes
Ahmet

Nice colors and good detail Jusni.
I like the added interest of the spider lurking below too :)

Merhaba Jusni,
