Pronunciation: he-MIP-ter-ra

Common name: true bugs


Identifying characteristics for the order Hemiptera include:

Front wings generally hemelytrous, i.e., thickened at the base and membranous at the tip.
Hind wings membranous and shorter than the front wings.
Antennae with 5 or fewer segments.
Mouth with a 3- or 4-segmented beak arising from the front of the head.
Tarsi with 3 or fewer segments.
Similar looking orders:
Homoptera - front wings of uniform texture rather than hemelytrous; beak arising from rear of head.
Coleoptera - front wings meet in straight line down the back; antennae with 8 or more segments; mouth parts chewing; tarsi often with 4 or 5 segments.
Orthoptera, Phasmida, Mantodea - antennae many segmented; moth parts chewing.

Hi Foozi!

We all have and want to learn... finally, this is also one of the aims of TN!

I like your picture very much. It's technically perfect: very sharp, crystal clear and with a good natural colour balance. Maybe I just would flip it in order to have the larger empty space on the left. In that way, you could easily respect the rule of the thirds.

Hello Foozi,
An excellent macro showing a nymph of a species of True Bug. The dorsal POV shows most of its features with excellent sharpness, colours and lighting against a pleasing natural neutral BG.

I must say that Canon of yours really rocks in this post. Superbly isolated image totally silenced the background and the natural color of this hemiptera is just brilliant. I guess the Live-view helps in metering the right razor-thin DoF and you have executed the shot flawlessly in this post.
