Hello friends in TN,

I am posting a pair of Malay Lacewings today from Penang Butterfly Farm.

Cethosia hypsea hypsina (Malay Lacewing)

Family Nymphalidae:

The Nymphalidae are members of the Superfamily Papilionoidea, the true butterflies. Worldwide in distribution, this family has approximately 4,700 species that are unevenly distributed. Coppers are especially dominant in north temperate regions, blues are richest in the Old World tropics and north temperate zones, and hairstreaks are particularly abundant in New World tropics. The adults are typically small to tiny and often brilliantly colored--iridescent blues, bright reds, and oranges. Adults of both sexes have three pairs of walking legs, though most males have fused segments in their front legs. Most adults visit flowers for nectar, but some harvesters feed on wooly aphid honeydew and some hairstreaks feed on aphid honeydew or bird droppings. Females lay single, sea urchin shaped eggs on host leaves or flower buds; the resulting caterpillars are typically slug-shaped. In many species, caterpillars depend on ants for protection, so caterpillars produce sugary secretions that are collected by the ants. Most species overwinter in either the egg or pupal stage.

Jusni

Hi Jusni
Nice shot. Pretty good sharpness, nice OOF background. But you must change the note It is family Nymphalidae (not Lycaenidae)
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hello Jusni,
An excellent capture of a pair of mating Malayan Lacewings taken in Penang. We visited the Penang butterfly house about 15 years ago and saw this species there but not in the wild. Was this shot taken in the wild?
Whatever, it is a sharp and well composed image and the use of flash has given just the right colours.
Thanks for sharing this fine image,
Ivan

Very beautiful capture! Great colors, great detail and of course - getting a mating shot is equally great! Bravo! Cheers, Klaus

Hi Jusni,

I thought perhaps these butterflies had landed on one of your legs, but then realised that it must be some sort of plant:-) The colours are stunning and the level of detail amazing, which shows very good control over your flashgun. Great technique.

Hi Jusni, very interesting colour seen on these two Malay Lacewings, and an interesting pose. I've never seen anything quite like these ones. Very good detail seen on both, against a neutral background, which accentuates their colour. Your use of your fill in flash was quite effective. This is something I need to work on myself.

Thanks, John
