Lionfish

Im not an underwater diver and this one is taken from an aquarium at Penang fisheried Dept. This was taken with a monopod.
Personally I really like the beauty of the lionfish.

The Penang Aquarium, officially the Fisheries Department Research Institute Aquarium, is a medium-size aquarium located within the Fisheries Research Institute complex in Batu Maung, on the southeast tip of Penang Island.

The aquarium has 25 tanks to showcase various types of marine life, especially those found in the regional waters. Among them are the lion fish, the boxfishes, moray eels, tangs, surgeon fish, cat sharks, stone fish, angel fish, blue spotted stingray, fox face fish, parrot fish, squirrel fish, damsels, bivalves and more. The largest tank measures 15 ft by 10 ft and houses the big fishes such as the snappers, the tudung periuk and the nyior nyior.

A Lionfish is any of several species of venomous marine fish in the genera Pterois, Parapterois, Brachypterois, Ebosia or Dendrochirus, of the family Scorpaenidae. The lionfish is also known as the Turkey Fish, Dragon Fish, Scorpion or Fire Fish.[1] They are notable for their extremely long and separated spines, and have a generally striped appearance, red, green, navy green, brown, orange, yellow, black, maroon, or white.

There are many types of lionfish that vary in size. The common lionfish generally reaches a size of 30-35cm, while smaller lionfish, like the Fuzzy Dwarf, are typically the size of a tennis ball, not including fins.

The lionfish is one of the most venomous fish on the ocean floor. Lionfish have venomous dorsal spines that are used purely for defense. When threatened, the fish often faces its attacker in an upside down posture which brings its spines to bear. However, a lionfish's sting is usually not fatal to humans. If a human is envenomed, that person will experience extreme pain, and possibly headaches, vomiting, and breathing difficulties. A common treatment is soaking the afflicted area in hot water, as very few hospitals carry specific treatments.[4][5][6] However, immediate emergency medical treatment is still advised, as some people are more susceptible to the venom than others.

Lionfish are voracious predators. When hunting, they corner prey using their large fins and then use their quick reflexes to swallow the prey whole. In captivity, lionfish can be trained to eat frozen brine shrimp, mysis, and krill.

The lionfish have very few natural predators, but the grouper and other lionfish have been found with lionfish remains in their stomachs.

Janice

Hello Foozi,

A lovely creature, that makes me wonder what nature had in mind when creating this fellow!
Sharp fine details under difficult conditions, the point of view gives a good impression of the fish...
The colours combine well, making the subject stand out!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Hi Foozi,
I guess you didn't have a lot of light inb that aquarium, and a time exposure wouldn't have worked,so we have slightly soft/sharpened Lionfish.
A very interesting specimen though, worth posting.

Salam Foozi,

Capturing fish in a glass tank was never easy and your monopod made excellent accessory in getting this one so perfect.

The IS feature of your little gadget helps in getting this fish in top notch details. Beautiful fish in excellent framing. Well done and be ready for a 5K nudge real soon.

Good night.
Jusni

Hello Foozi
very beautiful fish with strange shapes and nice colors
i like contrast between the lionfish and the blue BG
very well done

Hello Foozi !
I have always like these fish, their shape, their color... You have captured this one very nicely, with vivid colors, and the deep blue makes a wonderful BG. I know how had it is to take fish pictures in an aquaium (I have tried, some years ago, and not a single picture was good) - you managed to bring out the best of the situation.Very well done !
Valérie.
