Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, rising 2,000 feet or 600m from the seabed. It is located in the Celebes Sea east of the major town of Tawau and off the coast of East Malaysia on the Island of Borneo. It was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcanic cone that took thousands of years to develop. Sipadan is located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin, the centre of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this ecosystem.
Each dive you normally see around 20 turtles so opportunities to get a shot like this does comes now and then. Turtles are my favorite animals so I was heaven during my dives in Sipadan.
The turtle in the picture is a Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas), listed as endangered with population number declining due to poaching and polution.
At Sipadan, there is even an underwater cave at Sipadan called 'Turtle Cave' or 'Tomb Cave'. And flashing your light inside the cave in the dark reveals skeletons of turtles that have wandered in to the cave and gotten lost in the maze. |

Hello Johannes! Very original POV. Funny perspective. Nice lightness. Very nice colors. Interesting picture.
Hi Johannes,
Your powerful silhouette of a Green Turtle against a backdrop of glinting sun through the sea produced a flying-soaring effect, which is quite nice. TFS.
