Hello friends in TN,

The tsunami, the first ever to hit Malaysia, was triggered by an 8.9 magnitude earthquake in northern Sumatra, Indonesia, on 26th December 2004. The affected states were Penang, Kedah, Perak and Perlis. The tidal wave also hit Langkawi, but the damage was not as bad as on other places along the coastal line of the Indian Ocean.

How many people realise, however, that many of the deaths caused by the tsunami could have been prevented? The areas affected have been hit by tsunamis in the past, with far fewer deaths resulting, because the coastlines of South East Asia were protected by a natural defence system, composed of coral reefs and mangrove forests.

Many of the previous tsunamis were tamed by the coral reefs before hitting the coast, where they were absorbed by a dense layer of red mangrove trees. These flexible trees, with long branches growing right down into the sand below the surface of the sea, absorb the shock of tsunamis. Behind the red mangrove trees there is a second layer of black mangrove trees, which are taller and slow down the waves.

Malaysia will set up a national tsunami early warning system targeted to be operational by the end of 2005. The country will also replant and restore mangrove swamps to act as natural shields against strong waves. Malaysia's new tsunami warning system will comprise a network of buoys and sensors monitored via satellite.

There is now greater commitment from the government to conserve and restore mangrove swamps in the country.

Merhaba Jusni,
Sevgiler.
Hüseyin

Salam Jusni,

Beautiful mangrove swamp shot. Original colour and athmosphere you present here with great compo and detail.Useful note and conscious of mangrove to nature.many thanks for sharing.

regards
mohaimin

Hi Jusni,
I like your low POV and what it did to the perspective of the tree. The mangroves ae a very good eco system and not only a good defence against a Tsunami. I do agree that the reason why this spot did not receive that much damage is because of the forrest.
Back to the photo. I do feel that you need to be careful with the adjustements. The color of the sky and leaves is a bit odd. Your noise reduction also cost you some details.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Jusni,

This is an interesting posting. I like the point of view, looking up the river. I am viewing this on my laptop and the color looks ok to me. I'm not sure about the black border... especially at the top. It creates an area of very high contrast next to the white cloud. As such my eye just naturally keeps going there instead of to the more important parts of the image.

Hi Jusni.
I remember those events very well. It was so dramatic time. Your shot of the place is superb. I like rich lights and colours, crisp sharpness of the image (DOF is perfect), selected POV and superb composition. You managed to create a true three-dimensional picture. Well done.
Alexei.

Hello Jusni,
I really hope the destruction of the mangrove along the coasts in Asia have stopped and it is good to hear that there is a plan to restore them in Malaysia. Man's over exploitation tends to lead to disaster!
Beautiful view from Langkawi where the mangrove seems to be still in tact. A fine composition in beautiful colours.

Hi Jusni,

Your landscapes are so beautiful - I wish you would post them more often. On my screen the colors are just wonderful and couldn't be better! The trees are lovely along the banks of the river. I wish I could go around the bend and see more. Wonderful pov - very interesting notes.

Jane

Hi Jusni,
Excellent color, clarity, and detail.
Great notes connecting the image with the disaster in 2004, and how/why Langkawi was not so hard-hit.
Well done!
Howard

Great shot with beautiful composition and colours. The way the creek flows into the jungle guides the viewers eyes along with it. I am tempted to cruise along the river :) . Very beautiful atractive shot. Thanks for sharing.

Ciao Jusni,

Hello Jusni, Very informative note and good POV. Lovely landscape shot with superb colors and lighting. Ganesh

Hi Jusni,

An excellent example of bad things happening when we destroy natural systems. What a shame that we have paid such a terrible price to learn this simple lesson.

A fascinating photo and note, well done.

Thanks,
John
