Hi friends in TN,

In October 1998, I spent five days in this forest deep inside the primary forest in Belum, Perak. That was my third and last visit to that place. I discovered the negative tucked inside my drawer and decided to scan it for TN. The shot was taken with my film camera : Olympus OM-1N.

The Royal Belum forest is located in the Gerik, Perak, area (Hulu Perak). It is believe that the forest reserve coverage is about 290,000 hectares and with more than 146,000 hectares of virgin forest. The forest is divided into two sections: the upper Belum area, which stretches to the Thai-Malaysian border covering 117,500 hectares of impenetrable jungle and the lower Belum mostly covered by Temenggor Lake. The State of Perak has decided to preserve the Belum and Temenggor forests as a permanent nature reserve for research.

The entire forest of Belum and Temenggor was considered a ‘black area’ and was placed under a State of Emergency from 1948 until 1989. The communist party of Malaya was extremely active in that area and according to sources; the East-West Highway proposed by an army General believed cutting a road through the area would hamper the communists’ movements. However, this road was constantly under threat of being bombed and sabotaged by renegades. Peace has since reigned over the area after the signing of the Haadyai Accord in 1989.

Hello Jusni! Nice capture. Very nice frame. Interesting colours. Good sharpness. Well done!

Hi, Jusni,

thanks for sharing this. your photo reminds me of the O-level Geography I studied when I was in Singapore. haha, we studied the structure and different speices of the rainforest and I remember we drew references from the examples in Malaysia. Your photo brings me the good memory about the two countries. thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Jusni.
As habitant of the steppe zone, I visit forest very seldom and like it a lot. Your post is very interesting and note great. Together with photo it gives us complete idea about beautifulness of the Royal Belum forest. I like selected point of shooting, luxury vegetation and cute water stream with loose of stones. Hello Jusni,
Though the rocks in the river are a little OE it is a fine scan of a view of the Belum Forest. This is well composed and sets the imagination going as to the wildlife that can be photographed there.
Thanks for sharing this from your archives,
Best regards,
Ivan

Jusni,

Thank you for posting this lovely landscape, and for the history lesson! I love the lush greenery and flowing river. It never ceases to amaze me how the governments of the world can so quickly destroy our natural treasures. Here in the US, the new thing is "mountain top removal mining." But I won't get into that right now. I'm very happy that in your case there was a peaceful resolution that preserved the beauty and integrity of Belum Forest.

Regards,
Randy
