A herd of Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) in Mongolia's eastern steppe.
These gazelles range nomadically over incredible distances and can run several kilometers at a maintained speed of 40 kph.
Herd size varies with the terrain, human/livestock presence, and stochastic rainfall events.
The overall population is estimated somewhere around 1.5 million individuals. Despite this seemingly large population the species is at risk due to oil development and trade routes to China bisecting the steppe which threatens to fragment this region, one of the largest intact grassland ecosystems in the world, with built up roads, fenced railways, and permanent human settlements. |
