| Mongolian gazelles (Procapra gutturosa) populate the vast steppe covering most of eastern Mongolia north of the Gobi. This fragile environment is one of the few remaining grassland ecosystems of this scale left on earth as most other great grasslands, including the once great plains of the united states, have succumbed to fragmentation and loss of keystone species that has led to ecosystem collapse. Capable of sustained running at 40+ kph for several kilometers, these gazelles are a sight to behold when they congregate in groups of several thousand (and occasionally, depending on rainfall patterns, groups up to 200,000 as reported on BBC and elsewhere) in an incredibly diverse environment shared with wolves, Corsac foxes, countless birds of prey, and nomadic herders among others. Hopefully this region will be appreciated for its entirely unique scale and splendor as Mongolia develops its oil, mining, and road infrastructure. |

great capture, TFS Ori
Hi Jeff,
The effort here is excellent, I love the position of the subject in the frame. On the nit side , the sky could have been reduced a bit in the framing so that the interest remains on the savanna and these gazelles.
