Lethe serbonis (Hewitson, 1876) The Brown Forester

Lethe serbonis is another montane dwelling Satyrid thast ranges through Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Assam and Western China. Again, information on the web is scarce. However, I did stumble across a pdf of The Gazeteer of Sikhim (sic) first published in 1894 and reprinted in 1989. This includes a lot of notes on butterflies and other insects and is well worth downloading for its historical value. You can find it here. I quote from the Gazeteer below:

LETHE (Debis) SERBONIS, Hewitson.
Occurs only at high elevations, 7,000 to 9,000 feet elevation, from June to September, in heavy forest.

I can concur with these short notes, the elevation having been about 8,000 feet in Nepal in July. I have also deduced that the species is on a list of butterflies of some ecological concern to the Indian government. Perhaps someone who lives locally can get more information about this status.

Unfortunately I do not have a picture of the underside, but in Colin Smith's Illustrated Checklist of Nepal's Butterflies, it appears not very different from the upperside, but with more basal and discal banding.

The species is shown with pretty good sharpness.
Its colour pattern is well reproduced and the characteristics are nicely presented.

Hello Alan,
What a splendid capture of this Satyrid butterfly with wide-open wings. Very sharp details and I like the beautiful pattern and shades of brown to gold. Fine rocky and contrasting background too. Amazing quality for a scanned picture that old!
