Spindasis syama peguanus
Club Silverline

This species is relatively widespread, occurring from Nepal through its type location Java to China, Taiwan and the Philippines. Nine subspecies are listed here, albeit under the genus Cigaritis.

It seems to have figured on TN only once before, from Singapore, which would probably be subspecies terana. According to here:

"The Club Silverline can be distinguished from the other Singapore species by the basal streak on the forewing below. The colour of the silver edging may be black (most often) or dark red (rarely).

Like the Long Banded Silverlines, the Club Silverlines often stop to perch on grasses. The butterflies are often seen in the early morning hours and late afternoon hours, feeding on flowering plants. The flowers of the Mile-a-Minute (Mikania cordata) are the usual favourite. The butterflies are fast flyers, but often stop to perch on a few favourite perches to rest. In the later part of the afternoon, they often open their wings flat to sunbathe."

This picture was taken in Nepal, the most northern outpost of the species range. It was scanned from 35mm slide, the BG de-noised and then sharpened in CS3.

Hi Alan

What an explendid picture of this Club Silverline. I really like the combination of the black/white insect, and the blurred green background.
Great details and lighting. Do you know what the orange spot on the back of the wing is for?

Widespread of not its a lovely speciman and I wouldn't mind seeing such beauties around my way. I really like the deep colour, the detail is spot on and the DOF has left it swimming on a sea of green.A lovely capture....well done.
