Rupal (Toshain) Glacier is one of Pakistans many glaciers. It extends from an unnamed peak just north of Laila Peak (5927m, the second peak from the right) down Rupal Valley, eventually melting to form Rupal River.

This area is located in the extreme far north of Pakistan, way up in the Karakoram mountainrange. From the nearest major town (Gilgit) it takes around 4 days to reach this massive glacier and it's a very pleasent trek for sure.

Now glaciers aren't dead... they are very much alive. Even though they only move a few metres every year, while trekking over or beside them you can hear the distant rumbling of thousands of ton of ice on the move. You can hear the the melting and if you close your eyes you can picture it very slowly grinding along the ground.

Due to global warming glaciers are melting at a fast rate all over the world. And one of the biggest threats lies in this area. India is depending on glacier ice melting and streaming down the Himalayas into India. With so many glaciers growing smaller these days it will pose a serious problem for India in the future.

I tried to get most of this massive glacier into the panorama and also the nearby peaks. It is 5 photos stitched together. I was extremely lucky with the weather, as you can see. Rarely is the sky this clear.

This is a glacier I like to see, it is so enormous! I like this light and white clouds hanging over picks.

Hi Johannes,
This is fantastic, what a view. I like the large post, it gives so much to look at and it's amazing to see so much of the glacier in a single image. I think on the artistic side more sky would have been better, at a minimum just to avoid the cropped cloud. Nice work, it's an impressive image.

Hi Johannes,

it's nothing less than sensational, your panorama shot from the Karakoram mountains. I studied the details with pleasure. I found "drumlins" for the first time on a fresh moraine (drumlins are the wavelike structures perpendicular tothe glacier's movement). We have some drumlin landscapes in Switzerland but people like me have a hard time to relate them with glaciers. Please keep on sending such interesting pictures of regions rarely ever photographed to TN!
