Taken 10:16 on a beautiful morning. This section of the Iwahig River is inside the sprawling Iwahig Penal Colony reservation which, at one time, had a total land area of more than 50,000 hectares. Hardly accessible to mass tourism, the river is protected by thick mangrove forests on both banks, some portions up to half a kilometer thick, and has managed to stay relatively pristine and is a rich fishing ground of the settlers and inmates in this minimum security penal institution.
This particular spot is about 3.6 kms from the mouth of the river, which itself meanders more than 20 kms. inland. The widest part of the river is roughly 150 meters, where Firefly Island is, some 1.8 kms. upriver from here. |
