This is a flock of Asian Glossy Starlings that colonized a tree in front of my house in Malinao, Aklan, the Philippines. Every afternoon at about 5 pm, they gather on my TV antenna, waiting for everyone to come ... then from here, they fly to a particular ebony tree to roost for the night.
These starlings are very raucous, very gregarious birds that fly as a flock. Before settling on their roosting tree, they perform displays like twists and forming symmetrical patterns. Much of the birds on the antenna are juvenile - upper parts blackish brown; underparts whitish streaked black. The adults have glossy green plumage which may appear black in poor light. The eyes are red (sorry, not shown much in the photograph).
They are not endangered, have adapted well to human habitation and can be found in urban areas (such as Metro Manila in the Philippines). This particular flock lives in the heart of my town which is a semi-urban municipality. |
