Pygmy Woodpecker (Dendrocopos kizuki)
Alternate common names: Japanese Pygmy Woodpecker, Japanese Spotted Woodpecker, Japanese Woodpecker
This bird is smaller than a sparrow, may be 11-13cm.
At first time I saw this bird, I supposed a kind of tit. It was moving very fast and it was very difficult to follow in a rain forest with a photo machine and bag. Then it started hitting tree trunks and looked for insects, just like a specific woodpecker.
I am not sure but this species is an endemic for Japan and also other neighbor islands. I tried but I couldn’t find any documents about it even in Japanese.
This is not a technically perfect shot I know but I’d like to share the first photo of this species in TN. |

Hello Fatih,
This is a sharp shot with an interesting pose of this woodpecker. However I think it is little too dark and the composition can be improved. So I took it to the WS. Ihope you don't mindTFS, regards, Ivan

hi Fatih,
in my oppinion with a little increase ob brightness this can be a perfect photo. also in my oppinion a lithe off-centered of the bird will help to composition.

Beautiful capture and presentation amazing colour...love the bg as well...
Hi Fatih,
No, this is not a Japanese endemic. There is one race, permutatus, that has its' range totally outside of Japan. Another race, nippon, shares a Japanese distribution (on Honshu) with some zones in NE China and S Korea. There is a third race that might be totally Japanese, seebohmi, the race of your bird, but depends on a final resolution of the Sakhalin and S Kuril Islands question. As you might know, a state of war exists between Japan and Russia, and the bone of contention are these Islands. Race seebohmi has distribution on Sakhalin, S Kuril Is., and Hokkaido.
