Bark Beetle Hunter

Thanasimus formicarius (Cleridae). Size 8 mm.
Several times this afternoon I noticed these beetles on bark of sunlit pine trees, started to take out the camera from my backpack and that's only to see that they were disturbed and hid in bark's cracks. Trying to force them to come out with a pine needle was pretty useless since they would rather fall from the tree and disappear among dry grass and plant litter. I was almost hopeless when finally one of these agreed to pose for me. There were up to 3 beetles on a single tree, but the number can be much bigger. I was lucky enough to spy its victim there, too, that was a Pine Shoot Beetle (Tomicus piniperda), half the predator's size. I can't remember seeing both Th. formicarius and its prey so early, normally it's April 10 to 15 in our climes... |

Excellent close macro of an Ant Beetle. The sharpness, lighting and colour make this shot of a high quality that deserves attention.
Everything is a couple of weeks early: global warming?

Hi Dmitry,
This is very similar to a beetle we have in New Zealand called the Tiger Beetle.
They live in tunnels in the earth,and run around very quickly.
Your photograph is excellent,with great details and colour.

while I was'nt looking, you mounted this wonderful Thanasimus in hunting posture. It's so sharp, the background natural, the animal clearly moving. And the colours! My congratulations!
