Asian Glossy Starling
Aplonis panayensis

Main features:
Medium (20cm), dark glossy green plumage which appears black in poor light; eyes red. Genders look alike.

Juvenile: Upper parts blackish brown; underparts whitish streaked black.

Call:
Described as metallic ink when perched; noisy piping or ringing whistle in flight.

In flight:
Direct and rapid, usually at tree-top height; wings small and triangular; tail short.

Status in Singapore:
Very common resident throughout the island and North and South offshore islands.

World distribution:
India to the Philippines and Sulawesi.

Classification:
Family Sturnidae (Starlings, Mynas, Oxpeckers). World 148 species, Singapore 9 species of which 3 are introduced.

Hello Ang,
The Asian starling is very different colourwise from the European starling but it would appear that it is just as noisy! Good sharp detail and nice composition.

Great photo of this Starling. Sharp with beautiful colours, also in the BG. Nice composition. All the words in the photo lead away from the subject, but that's personal.

Well isolated, focus is perfect and the detail on the eye and bill really is very good. It looks more like a small crow than a starling as we Europeans see them. Very interesting looking bird.
