I am very fortunate to have met many great teachers in my life. Mrs. J. N. was one of them.
She taught me English when I was a student at the Temasek Junior College in Singapore. Our relation didn’t end after graduation (after my return to Hong Kong). She became my good friend and lifelong mentor.
We kept in touch by letters, festival cards, the hand-made teddy bears... She loved Hong Kong a lot - she travelled to Hong Kong frequently for shopping and sight-seeing. I also visited the Lion City from time to time. We shared many common interests – particularly in water-colour painting and architecture….we once planned to visit Falling Water, a masterpiece by our favourite architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
Two years ago, when I visited Singapore again, she invited me and my friends to stay in the beautiful chalet at Changi Village. She was so kind and caring that apart from booking the lovely chalet for us, she brought us big towels for bathing, tooth brushes and toothpastes as well as a big plastic bag full of snacks… in her eyes, we were still school kids and small children : )
There, I witnessed the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen in my life… it was indeed a special gift from my great teacher, apart from those bathing towels and tooth brushes.
That was, however, the last time I saw Mrs. J. N. in the beautiful Lion City.
She died a year later, in 2007, due to an illness.
As if knowing that I would be too shocked to accept her death, she left me with an interesting thought.
She celebrated the last birthday in her beloved Hong Kong early last year. She passed away in Singapore on July 1, the anniversary of the Hong Kong handover – from a British colony to a Chinese territory.
Mrs. J. N., I miss you very much! I hope you are happy and fine up there : ) |
