Slaty-Breasted Rail
(Blue-Breasted Banded Rail)
Description:
A medium-size of 27 cm, heavily-barred crake with chestnut crown and rear neck and slaty-blue fore-neck and breast. Upper parts brown vermiculated with white. Lower breast to vent white vermiculated with black. Fairly long, rather heavy and slightly decurved red bill. Grey legs. Sexes alike though female has unmarked white central belly. Juvenile streaked brown.
Voice :
A harsh, repeated gelek
Habits:
Extremely shy and somewhat crepuscular. Inhabits well-vegetated freshwater marshes and adjacent scrub. Feeds on insects and seeds. Nest well-hidden on ground.
Distribution:
Scarce but overlooked resident throughout peninsular, the Northeast Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Also found in China ans Southeast Asia.
