Paddyfield Pipit
Size: 15 cm

Description:
A medium-sized, brown, streaked pipit with a fine, short bill. Similar to juvenile Tawny, Byth’s and Richard’s pipit but short legged, clawed and tailed and with diffuse, dark lores. Under part streaking confined to sides of throat and upper breast. Warm buff wash breast and flanks. White outer tail feathers. Horizontal stance.

Voice:
A short weak tseep tseep or chip chip.

Habits:
Inhabits short grasslands, marshes, cultivation and fallows. Feeds on ground in pairs or loose groups mainly on invertebrates and seeds. Runs rapidly on ground. Often wags tail. Fluttering flight rarely sustained. Confining but can be furtive. Parachuting song-flight. Nests on ground.

Distribution:
The most widespread pipit and common breeding resident throughout the island.
