This is a male Red Grasshawk (Neurothemis fluctuans) from the Family Libellulidae taken on a morning walk around the southern edge of McRitchie Reservoir. The species has a wingspan of 50mm and a distribution from China through most of South-east Asia and India. They live on the margins of vegetated freshwater bodies with emergent vegetation and lots of open water, drainage ditches and freshwater ponds.

Hello Chris,
I posted a shot of one of these from the bot gdns a couple of years back and I didn't know the vernacular name. Now thanks to you I know!
I fine shot of what looks like a juvenile Red Grasshawk as the body has not turned red yet. Nice POV, sharpness and colours in an excellent composition with a contrasting neutral BG.
Thanks and have a good weekend,
Cheers,
Ivan

Hi Chris,
This surely is one of the best representations of the species I've seen up to now, perfect POV and a steady hand produced a pin-sharp image with good colour rendition, also demonstrated the fine bilateral symmetry of the d.fly.
Cheers,
Mehmet

Hi Chris,
This dragonfly is stunning. I don't think I have ever seen one with such colorful wings.
You certainly caught it in a great pose for this perfect presentation.
The crispness of the details and the diagonal composition, not to mention the excellent DOF, make this shot a pleasure to behold.
