A white tiger in the Singapore Zoological Gardens.
The white tiger is an extremely rare kind of tiger, its birth occuring approximately only 1 out of 10 000 births in the wild. Besides its colouring, the white tiger is identical in every aspect to the normal coloured tigers. The abnormality is the result of a double recessive allele in the tiger's genetic code.
This colour mutation has only been known to occur amongst Bengal sub-species in the wild. However, Siberian and Bengal tigers have been inter-bred in captivity to create hybrid white tigers.
