More details of this beauty ....

West AFRICAN crown crane.
Height: ~104 cm, 3 ft.
Weight: ~3.6 kg, 8 lbs.
Population: ~40,000
Trend: Declining

Subspecies: Balearica pavonina pavonina (West African)
Balearica pavonina ceciliae (Sudan)

Habitat: Grasslands, flooded plains, marshes, grainfields, and shorelines of Uganda, Kenya, south to Natal and west to northern Namibia.

Crowned Cranes occupy an important place in the cultural life of the Turkana (Kenya) pastoralists as messengers of peace. The cranes were protected because they were believed to get rid of livestock pests and to guard waterholes and swamps.

Length: 3 feet 6 inches.

Nest: Monogamous, probably pairs for life. Lays two to three eggs in a nest in marsh.

Voice: Gives low purr, when feeding, loud honk when alarmed.

Notes: Cranes are large, long-legged birds with short, straight bills. Of the 15 species world-wide, six live in Africa. The West African crowned crane eats grass, seeds, corn, rice, insects, small reptiles and amphibians, fish, and crustaceans. It sometimes stamps its feet to flush insects and will join grazing animals for the same purpose. Usually seen in pairs or groups of up to several hundred, the cranes perform a colorful dance involving bowing, jumping, flapping wings, and circling. This is done in all seasons but particularly before breeding season.

You have captured the bird in an elegant posture, Guru Pawan.
I love the crown of this crane for its unique shape and colours and you have shown it well here.
TFS and take care.

Hi Pawan,
Nicely capturing this elegant crane, look like it moves very gracefully. Beautiful large bird.
Nice shot.

Hello Guru,
This is a very nice action catch. I like those great details and POV. My only not is that its feet are cut off... Many members here told me that, even if the feet are hidden in grass or something, it is better to have the feeling that they are there and I understood this "rule". Maybe you didn't have the choice? DOF is good with very natural lightning. I had a look at your gallery and I must say that you have great pictures. Thanks,
Claudine
