[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Winter has now returned to Scania. It is 4 deg below and blowing an easterly blizzard.

The only thing to do is dig in the archives and find something to remind us that there are places in the world where there is sunshine and warmth.

Such a place is Singapore, more specifically that oasis in the city, the Botanical Gardens. This male darter kept to a small ornamental pond. As he was very wary and flew off when approached too closely, I took this shot at a distance of over a meter.

The nice thing about dragonflies is that as they often have a favourite perch to which they usually return when scared away. It is just a matter of keeping one's distance and waiting.

I tried noise reduction with Neat Image but the result had a flattening effect.

Thanks to Kevin Seo (Undoredo) for the right ID

Very handsome dragonfly, Ivan.
I presume you got enough chances to get him in the best pose possible; that's the advantage in its habit of returning to the same perch time and again. As a result, you have captured a wonderful profile view in which all the parts of its body and colours are extremely well delineated.
And a perfect plain grey BG also does wonders here.

susen,förövrigt mycke bra!
sharp and fine macro with
nice pov and a very good
composition!
good shot!

Hello Ivan,
brilliant capture, showing the dragonfly very clearly with a lot of fine details against a well fitting neutral background.
Remarkably good depth of field covering the complete body and almost the entire wings from a side angle - at F/4, well demonstrating that major benefit of a good compact camera for wildlife insect macro shootings.
With thanks, and best regards,
Peter

Hello Ivan!
I agree with you in 100%! :) During the winter the optimistic thing we can see are pictures from summer period or warmer regions ;)
According to your picture I have to say that this is one of the best your macro photos (it does not mean that other are bad!!! :>) and I really like it.
Good DOF and nice, even if that typical, POV :)
The only thinkg which would be changed is some noise reduction.
Best greetings from Lodz,
Radomir

Hello Ivan,
Remarkable details and colors you display for us in this great capture of the darter, thanks for sharing.
Rick

Hej Ivan,
a very good POV and compostion
The colours of the dragon is lovely.
It's maybe a bit noisy, but thats ok for me,-
You are absolute right abour the dragonfly, they have a favorite stick when they always return too. That's why it's quite easy to use a tripod, all you need is a lot of patience.
Well done.

Nu har ni fĺtt snö nere i södern ocksĺ, här uppe har det snöat ordentligt i tre dagar nu, som tur är har vinden avtagit.

Hi Ivan ,
great shot with excellent details.
great colours and nice BG.
well captured.
thanks

Hi Ivan,
A very nice shot on this Red Darter. Well composed and framed. A nice clean OOF backround from the water shows him very well. I love the colors of these guys. Nice detail. Overall looks pretty darn good!

Hello Ivan,
This is a real beauty. I love its pose, colors, details and POV. Composition and exposure are very good too. Have you tried just to select the BG and applied Neat Image only on it; it gives great results as I'm concerned :) Thanks,
Claudine

Nice one, Ivan!
Pose, colours and details are good.

Hi Ivan, this is a beautiful shot of this dragonfly and its in perfect condition. You've let it set up the perfect pose for you. I like your note. Now when I look for dragonflies I'll stop chasing them.

The note on noise reduction I took as a personal challenge. So I've created a workshop where I have selectively reduced the noise on the background, then on the branches in a stepped effect to hopefully reduce the flattening effect you talk of.

Thanks, John

Salut Ivan
C'est une magnifique photo avec une excellente netteté, belle composition et superbes couleurs. Trčs joli contraste entre le rouge et le vert. Votre fond gris fait bien ressortir la libellule.
Félicitations et au revoir...JP

Hello Ivan,

Very nice picture of this dragonfly with an excellent POV... f/4 was well chosen in order to see the whole wings in focus...

The only thing is that I see a lot of noise in the BG... I think that passing the bg within a noise remover software like Neat Image should have help...

The grey bg enhances perfectly the insect!

Great job and TFS,

Michel

Hello Ivan,
A wonderful composition!
The insect really stands out, superb details and the colours make him a real eye-catcher...
I notice how nicely the clear parts of the wings reflect light!
