Great catch of this butterfly, I have tried to catch some by myself but they allways fly away :)
Nice sharpness and collours, this blue colour make picture more interesting.

You did well getting a tripod set up to capture this guy. Personally I think a tripod is a waste of time for butterfly shooting, you usually only get a few goes at an individual and you can usually get enough speed hand-held and f4 or 5 usually gets you enough DOF.
Nevertheless, a good capture with good details. Perhap too tightly framed for my liking, but that's just my taste.

Very good picture of the "Little Grey". I really like the brown bg surrounding the butterfly. pov and dof are perfect. The picture looks a little bit soft to me. A did a workshop to put more sharpness to your picture... I hope you'll like it...

Cropping to my taste a bit too close, but certainly a very pleasant, well describing shot of a hard to catch and very quickly moving tiny butterfly.

Hi Matt,
I see here a great macro photography of a wonderful Common blue butterfly. Using a tripod was no mistake. I use it most of the times when I shoot butterflies. Please don't mind me sharing this small tip with you because I shot hundreds of butterfly pictures and gradually came to this conclusion. I found it very useful (and it is probably the key factor in shooting butterflies which are active in daytime) to wait till one or two hours before sunset, when butterflies become less active and prepare for the nightsleep. They will rest quietly on a piece of vegetation offering you a perfect shooting session. You will have time not only to mount the camera on a tripod and setting it up for your perfect photo, but also to clean up the place around the subject from distracting vegetation (grass, leafs, etc). Plus you will have the time to shoot as many times as you wish, using the camera's built-in timer and using the natural sunlight which is very warm and beautiful before sunset. I still have some problems with focusing since I use a 200 mm telephoto zoom lens, but for now, I am happy with what I've got. This picture of yours is pretty sharp and has beautiful colors. I find the exposure great because for some reason I fail to expose Common blues properly. You did it well! Maybe you've framed the insect a tiny bit too close for my taste, buy I think this isn't a mistake, it's just a matter of personal preferrences. There's nothing much to say about the BG. It's blurred, has nice colors and makes a good combination with the blue color of the wings. A great job overall. Thanks a lot!
