Hi Matthew,
Nice shot! I have a picture of quite simmilar fellow judging on the look of it's face. It may a Lymantria dispar known as Gypsy Moth. It has a row of blue dots on the first part of the body and a row of red ones on the hind part. That makes it look quite beauitful.
The picture is good. I think the tight framing works well, but I think the colours are a little oversaturated. The blue has quite unnatural shade, it is lighter in reality.
Overall, well done on this one!

Hi Matt
Wow, I don't know the ID, but I can tell you that don't make this guy/gal less pleasing. It is an amazing macro shot and you have really brought out the colours to be enjoyed by all. Those bright blue headlights at the base of the bristles sure tell you that you do not want to mess with this one. If one was never burned by a hairy caterpillar you might be careless by trying to move it to a spot where you can take some more photos, but if you know what potent punch these caterpillars carry then you know to leave them in peace to go on their own undisturbed way.
I like this in-your-face approach with the taking and the cropping of the shot while you still show a significant amount of the body. The colours are rich and well saturated, the details are tack sharp and it is part of what makes this shot a real winner. The dark BG is great although almost unmentionable as the big fat worm fills the frame and the exposure was absolutely spot-on.
Very well done and TFS.

Loot

Matthew,
Good picture. Like it very much.
Read your intro page. Great story. South Korea and photography? I remember the worldchampionship football there. The 'photography' was outstanding. Better than the last one in Germany in my opinion. So it might been a good learning school, I guess?

Simply a spectacular shot! Amazing macro with the flash getting just enough DOF and a very sharp focus, and very smart to use your bike's light to backlight it. The colors are amazing - real National Geographic stuff! We also get a few monster caterpillars here from time to time - they look as if they've come from another planet, and your picture really does this one justice.

Mathew,
It, to me, matters little what spices it is. I only know that this is an OUTSTANDING image, whatever the type of caterpillar.
Excellent photography, my friend,
Mario from Calgary, Alberta.
