[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This shot is only a few hours old. As best I can tell, this is a spectacled toad (Bufo melanostictus). A few weeks ago, I was seeing dozens and dozens during my runs, now that number is dwindling. From what I have read, they move towards water during the mating season, which ends in August typically, so I am guessing that is ending. Maybe it was typhoon related? Anyways, there are fewer now, but they are still around.

This guy was not all that big, maybe about 4cm nose to tail. According to what I googled, the males get up to 6cm and the females up to 8cm. I guess this is sort of a juvenile.

As an aside, other than google, how does one go about identifying the critters we come across. Quite frankly, I am hopeless.

This is full frame, normal post processing, using my flash with diffuser, handheld, ISO 200. Taken at about 9:00pm.

Excellent portrait, the eyes are very good. The texture of hte skin is well captured, very good shot Darren.

Yes, good portrait, colour and texture are amazing...but, I do wish you had moved those leaves out the way to get the whole toad in.

Hi Darren , the DOF looks alittle shalow for F20, other wise its a nice image the head is very nicley seen.
as to Idents I find books work well, even if they dont give you a spot on ID it will give you enough of a hint to google it. What I do is start though image with either the rough name or disscription and look at the images when one looks the same I cross check it by copying the name and pasting it to the web bit of google and see if the name matches the image they dont allways. It can take time but worth it.

I like this potrait, I think the DOF helps to make the face the main subject of the photo. The textures are beutiful and the colours look natural. A good one.
