Shot this moth near the river Kwai. There were several identicle moths further up the tree trunk. I have no idea what this is. Any ideas?

What a fantastic looking bug. Colours and detail. POV is great.

Good job

Hi Isaac,
Cannot help you with the identification - but I can congratulate you on a fantastic capture.
Colours and details are excellent - and the insect is intriguing.

Isaac,
thank you very much for you very well taken documentary picture of that strange and very beautiful insect. Breath taking to look at!

By the way: I think it is not a moth. It is a Cicada.
But so far I have got no idea about the exact ID.
Best regards, Peter

A beautiful capture, Isaac! What a very odd looking insect. Great sharpness on the wing detail.

Hi Isaac

Excellent capture of a lantern-fly!

This beautiful insect is a member of the family Fulgoridae.

This is not a moth but a lantern-fly. The elongate head was once thought to emit light as the Latin name Pyrops candelaria, suggests, but this is not the case.

The elongate extension of the head also imitates a tail and vice versa, a good example of auto-mimicry, which is common in some species of lantern-fly to avoid predators.

Most Pyrops have a waxy coating on their abdomens and sometimes on their wings, and are accomplished hoppers and flyers

May I refer everyone to John Moore’s excellent site, which I use for identifying Thailand’s insects.

It is a bug possibly of species Pyrops candelaria. Very good work, congrats.

Hi Isaac:

Beautiful insect and pic...but isn't a Moth..this is a Fulgorid (Hemiptera) is most related with cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers and shield bugs than moths.
