Updated 17 November 2006. I now agree with Laurent Crouzier, Dmitry and Jandira, it's a carpenter bee (Xylocopa sp.). Thanks heaps for pointing out the correct ID.
Chris

....................................................
I spent the whole day wandering around the forest at Emerald Pool, a large natural pool that is fed by a spring near Krabi.

Its a beautiful place and the water was just the right temperature.

Didn't encounter many flies in Thailand, but this one certainly caught my attention. It had a wingspan of at least 50mm and as you can see, it was fat fellow with big eyes.

I have no idea what it is, so any suggestions are more than welcome.

thanks for looking.

Wow! What an impressive shot, Chris!
The POV on this one is simply outstanding! Great fromtal look! ;)
Excellent shapness too, along the entire length on the insect, due to the impecable DOF chosen.
Very well maneged exposure, too, resulting in very lovely natural colors and tones.
Great work!

Ricardo

Excellent POV Chris with great sharpness and illumination, perfect diffuse bottom starting from an adjusted DOF that also offers a very good focus.
I love details of the eyes of this insect.
The framing is something high, but it is only my point of view.
An interesting macro.
My best greetings... Ricardo

Nice portrait and compo. In my opinion, it have abit blured and you should change something:
Crop more on top of pic, sharpening abit and change another frame.
But dont pay attention to my crazy ideas much.
TFS.
Regards,
DT.

Hello Chris,
This is a fine shot of this giant fly, sharp and with fine BG. I can understand your frustration about the ID and I feel sad that I can't help.
TFS it anyway,

Hi Chris,
this fly looks huge, is it that big or does this superp POV give it that illusion? Great macro,, details, colors and sharpness are excellent. Great OOF BG that shows off this bug very well.

A máquina é excelente!
Um abraço
