In the jungle surrounding the Emerald Pool near Krabi, I found this beautiful Goblet Fungi (Cookeina sulcipes) a member of the Ascomycota division of the fungi kingdom.
This species is quite large with the cup having a diameter of 60mm. I was captivated by the glowing deep pink beauty of this specimen.

The sparse literature I could find suggests its not uncommon in Thailand, but this was the only one I saw, despite several days exploring the jungle. Unfortunately, I had left my tripod back in motel, so this is hand held and taken just after a rain shower, so the DOF is not optimal. As you can see much of the floor is devoid of vegetation, just decaying leaves and mud.

Hi Chris.
Its a beautie, and very exotic :)
The funel shape, but delicate texture and colours makes it unique.
I guess you had not tripod this time.
You did an excellent work handheld at 1/25, and to get so much DOF and details with this big aperture. Pleasant atmosphere.
Regards, and TFS.

What a great artist the Nature is!
Fantastic image, Chris. I am sure not many of us have seen this kind of an exotic species of fungus.
Great composition with remarkable sharpness and colours.
You deserve to be congratulated for this great work.
TFS and take care.

Hey Chris,
It looks indeed like a wine glass. And it's big enough :-)
Very nice shot with the colour of fungus well contrasted with the background.
Best greetings,
Michal

Hi Chris,
What a stunning capture of this unusual mushroom. It is the first time I see one like this. I like the details you caught and this nice composition. I think that the DOF is very good, even if you didn't have your tripod. TFS,
Claudine
