Lycaenidae
The Lycaenidae or copper butterfly are a large family of butterflies, also known as the gossamer-winged butterflies. They comprise about 40 % of all known butterfly species.

Hypolycaena Erylus Teatus
The upperside of the male is deep purple blue with a large circular brand on the forewing disc. The female is dull grey-brown and black marginal spots on the greyish white tornal area of the hindwing. The undersides of both sexes are a pale greenish grey with a cell-end bar and a narrow reddish brown post discal line on each wing. There is an orange-crowned black spot and a smaller one on the hindwings.

There are two tails originating from veins 1b and 2 from the hindwing. The species behaves in the typical Lycaenid behaviour of sliding the hindwings in a fashion where the tails appear to be alive. This acts as a decoy to fool predators into thinking that the rear end of the butterfly is the head with the antennae and "eyes".

Hello Jitti,
thank you for posting a picture of this small Lycaenide. A nice and sharp picture showing clearly the wing patterns. Figures of Lycaenidae in entomological books are often not suitable for identification purposes because details cannot be recognized. This is just different here!
Best wishes, Peter

Hello JC,
Superb details in the butterfly!
Good point of view, and macro work is well done...
Good light gives super colour reproduction, the touch of orange is an eye-catcher!

Lovely capture of this lycaenid taking minerals from the wood floor. It is sharp and contrasts well with the Bg, the whole shot being well presented. Well done!

Saludos... Ricardo

I like POV that you captured at the same level of the butterfly, with an excellent takeoff on the bottom diffuse and good control of the light, showing big details of the insect, in spite of the necessary speed.
The framing lightly uncentered benefits the aesthetics of the presentation.
An attractive post JC... thank you for sharing.
Regards... Ricardo

Sawasdee Jitty,

Hi Jitti,
What a good capture! Wonderful composition, background, colors, details and a beautiful butterfly. I read in your note the tail movement description and I see that this butterfly does the same as the one a captured. It's an interesting behaviour indeed.
Best regards mf,
José M.
