Anosia genutia

We have a number of pictures of genutia on TN, mainly from India, plus one or two from Singapore. Today I am posting an image of a male of the species from Vietnam. This is still the manland form of the butterfly, as in India, but there are other races in all the island groups from the Philippines in the north to the north-west coast of Australia in the south, although it is absent from the Moluccas and New Guinea.

Many TN regulars will be familiar with this species being placed in the genus Danaus, but I tend to agree with Kazuhiko Morishita who wrote the Danaid section of "Butterflies of the South East Asian Islands", who retained Danaus in the strict sense for the originally New World species plexippus, cleophile and erippus. In fact plexippus is strongly migratory and now has a trans-pacific distribution that includes New Zealand, Eastern Australia and New Guinea. Not only that, but plexippus is also found occasionally in Europe due to strong Atlantic winds.

The genus Anosia was erected in 1816 by Hubner and in the treatment of Morishita includes the species chrysippus, ismare, genutia, affinis and melanippus. A. genutia is principally identified, from external characters, by the hindwing black border being invariably narrow and clearly defined on both surfaces. It never tends to extend inwards unlike the orange-coloured subspecies of melanippus and affinis.

The butterflies frequent sunny clearings in the forest from owlands up to moderate elevations, and sometimes are found in villages and towns, often swarms of them hovering on flowers in and around the forest. They have occasionally been collected at high elevations, which shows their marked adaptability to various environments. The records at high altitudes include Mt. Kinabalu in Sabah, Borneo, at 1760 metres.

This picture was taken in a rural lowland part of central Vietnam. The picture has been slightly cropped, resized and sharpened for TN.

Excellent butterfly shot, Alan, especially in terms of depth of field and focus.

this is very beautiful buterfly, what we call here 'Striped Tiger', good specimen with all the markings shown clearly. longback I posted one of this species captured here (south india) but still looking for another chance. your notes are very useful and informative. tfs.

Technically excellent open-wing presentation of A. genutia, a Danaid new to me. The POV, BG and composition also contribute to this being a very fine image.
