Dahlia belongs to Asteraceae family.
The Dahlia came to Europe in the Botanical Gardens of Madrid from Mexico towards the end of the eighteenth century. It was named by Abbe Cavanille in honour of Andreas Dahl, Swedish scientist come environmentalist.
Earlier the dahlias used to be single (open-centred) & multi-ray open centre. However, the horticulturalists discovered that the Dahlia was a natural hybrid and when grown from seed, it readily changed its form and colour. Today we have a range of Dahlia types in over 30 species. |
