Again in Mountain Pine Ridge reserve I chased this Zebra Longwing (Heliconius charitonius) along the edge of a rainforest track for about 15 minutes until it settled on these leaves. Then I had to wait for what seemed like ages for it to open it wings. I only got two shots before it was off again, this time taking to the canopy, but I’m happy with the result. They are a member of the Nymphalidae or brush-footed butterflies.

The Zebra Longwing ranges from South America through Central America, the Caribbean to Florida and southern Texas. The wingspan is 100mm (4 in) and quite impressive. They are usually found associated with rainforest and gallery forest.

Males apparently seek out female while they are still in the chrysalis and mate with them as they are emerging. The male then deposits a chemical on the female that detracts other males from trying to mate with her.

Hello Chris,
Heliconiids are a favourite butterfly group of mine and when you can see and take such fine shots of them in the wild it is an experience that remains with you for along time. My shots from Trinidad are old slide images that I have scanned but are not worth showing on TN.
So this is great to see, a fine image with good sharpness, POV and set in a pleasing composition.
Thanks for sharing this,
Ivan

Hi Chris,
Splendid shot of this charming butterfly and the wings are truely long and beautiful. Great use of natural light and neatly exposed with sharp details. The DOF is great as is your top POV to portray it. Very nicely composed too. Kudos.

Hi Chris
Very nice shot. Great saturated colors and beautiful light. Good exposure on white parts of wings. I think that you should do little selective sharpening on wings. It is possible here You could improve the sharpness
Anyway very nice shot
Best wishes
Krzysztof
